Chairman of the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry Choi Tae-won emphasized the active promotion of carbon neutrality on Friday, saying, "If the climate change issue is left as it is, it will cause a far greater disaster than the COVID-19 pandemic."
Chairman Choi said at the Carbon Neutral Industry Transformation Promotion Committee held at the Korean Chamber of Commerce in Jung-gu, Seoul, "The climate crisis should be recognized as a problem to save the planet and humanity together."
Chairman Choi said, "Carbon neutrality is a very challenging task," he said. "Industrial development was achieved through the energy revolution, but carbon emissions have created climate problems, and somehow we have to overcome this crisis."
"If we fail to respond properly to the demand for carbon neutrality of the global supply chain and the introduction of a carbon border tax between the EU and the United States, the export path will be blocked." "Since the conditions and circumstances of each industry and company are different, it is necessary to gather various opinions and find solutions," he emphasized.
He also said, "The strategy for carbon neutrality presented so far reflects the current technology outlook. It should be converted to a Rolling Plan that reflects the emerging innovative technologies in the future."
Chairman Choi said, “It is necessary to continue developing and reflecting innovative technologies through open innovation by allowing various stakeholders, such as venture companies and future generations, to participate in the platform as well as governments, companies, and experts of the older generation. As carbon neutrality is a global challenge, we need to actively participate in international cooperation and take the lead," he said.
He added, "Bill Gates also said, ”I believe that zero carbon is a goal that can be achieved.” As an entrepreneur, I support him." "I hope that the Carbon Neutral Industry Transformation Promotion Committee, launched today, will serve as a platform for 2050 carbon neutrality goal.”
The opening ceremony of the Carbon Neutral Industry Transformation Promotion Committee held with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on this day was attended by Minister of Industry Sung Yun-mo, as well as 10 industry associations and research institutes, including industries that emit large amounts of greenhouse gases such as steel and petrochemicals.
